Maplewood 1850 House is nestled in the heart of the Berkshires.
As you can see in this map of Otis in 1849, 'The Maplewood' was owned by
Timothy Jones who operated a turning mill and saw mill with what was said to be
then, the oldest water power in town on the Farmington River.
In the 1850's there were 16 sawmills, 2 gristmills, 1 paper mill, 2
tanneries, 1 rake factory, 2 iron foundries, 7 blacksmith shops, 4 carriage
shops, 1 harness shop, 1 tailor's shop, several shoe shops, a furniture
manufactory, 1 clock case manufactory, and several wooden dish and bowl
shops. Some of these industries continued into the 70's and 80's.
Many of the abandoned mill sites can be seen along the various waterways.
At present, Maplewood 1850 house is owned and operated by Richard &
Carolyn Garretson.
